It is that time of the year! When summer break is ending and Captain’s Practice and Two-A-Days begin! Not one to be left out just because I’m no longer in high school, I weigh more than a football player, and have the lung capacity of… well, a pregnant person, Patrick and I started our own two-a-days on Saturday. Yes, that does sound a bit untoward, but we are firm in our commitment to not over-share, so read on.
I should note that I took a hiatus from anything resembling exercise during the majority of July. It was too hot to walk — morning, noon, and night. And to top it all off, I had overdosed on my Prenatal Fitness with Summer Sanders DVD. I think I could still pop in the DVD and recite the workout dialogue with the TV on mute.
Anyway, last week Patrick suggested that we start walking since the temps were passing for cool in the late evenings. In an effort to stay close to home, we walk a .5-mile loop around our home twice each night. Most of the walk is uphill, so even though we are clocking in barely a mile, believe me, with the extra girth I’m lugging around, loosening joints, and my lung expansion problems, it feels like quite the challenge!
On Saturday, I decided to kick it up a notch and get into shape for labor with a two-a-day workout. Two miles in 40+ non-consecutive minutes… I’m not sure if this will gear my body up for the marathon that is labor, but it is getting me into the spirit of sport and training from which I will be drawing during labor.
Oh! And labor will be soonish. I’m 38 weeks. We are taking bets. I say between weeks 41 and 42. Patrick says between 39 and 40. OB/GYN, just for fun, chimed in with 40-41weeks. Please let Patrick be right!

I did long walks through the entire end of my second pregnancy. It gave me something to do with my nervous energy, and it made me feel lots better.
After 38 weeks, we quit answering the telephone because I got tired of the “haven’t you had that baby yet?!” calls. We changed the message on the machine and let people leave their guesses as to birth date, weight and gender. I have all those guesses in a baby book. It made the time pass a little easier.
I’m impressed that you could do long walks! I can only walk 1 mile at a time. At the .75 mile mark my stomach gets so tight! I push through, but man it makes it difficult to walk/breathe. But I do love getting rid of that nervous energy.
Such a cute idea to record people’s guesses!!
Tight stomach, like contraction tight stomach? I always had a ton of contractions when walking, too. Ah, now I’m all nostalgic. I liked being pregnant. Most of the time.
Do contractions stay tight for more than a minute? I always thought they were short things? But how funny if those are contractions! I have those every time I walk!
Yay 38 weeks!! I remember I was 41 weeks with absolutely no progress with my oldest and I walked around a huge mall with my mom…or should I say waddled. Water broke the next morning
You got this!! I am so excited for you.
Haha! Good point, Jenny. I say I’m “walking,” but it is a full-on waddle. Hoping these two-a-day waddles help her drop, but water breaking seems like asking for too much at this point!
For me, in the end the only thing that felt good was swimming. I think if I were to ever get pregnant again, I would spend the entire time like one of those pre-cogs in Minority Report–just floating in a pool.
Oh my gosh! My happiest moments have been in the water! Sure I looked like a fat seal bobbing over the waves, but man I was am happy in the ocean! I’ve only been to the local pool a few times. I like morning swims and I can’t figure out if “Adult Swim” is really “Senior Swim” and I’m crashing the party…
