Research shows that what a woman eats during pregnancy shapes food preferences of her child later in life. Both breast milk and amniotic fluid contain the flavors of foods that mom-to-be is eating. In fact, research at the Monell Chemical Senses Center has not yet found a flavor that isn’t transferred in utero. It is even proposed that memories of those flavors in breast milk shape a child’s food preferences later in life. Neat and ew! So it isn’t just that you are what you eat when you’re preggos, but your baby is what you eat too.
The bottom line of this research seems to be, “So moms-to-be, start eating right ASAP.” As if pregnant ladies are all at home eating Twinkies and potato chips since finding out they are with child.
When I’m rocking the bump I will be making a conscious effort to keep my diet balanced, but here are the foods I can’t get enough of, so my babe will be likely to be LOVING:
- bacon (and prosciutto)
- pho
- edamame
- potatoes
- Sour Skittles (I am ashamed)
Of course there are certain foods (good and bad) that I just cannot eat, future baby, so here are a few new tastes you’ll have to acquire on your own (though I’m sure your dairy-loving daddy will help):
- cheese
- ice cream
- yogurt
- chocolate
- jello/pudding

I want to play along! If I were pregnant today, our child would probs crave:
1. Wine
2. Sushi
3. Coffee
4. Pasta
5. Seafood, more generally
So basically, I’ve killed my child before he/she is born. It will be a *rough* nine months, I’ve gotta tell ya… because all of my favorites are forbidden! On the plus side, hubs has said when the time comes he’ll give up those things with me.
Thanks for playing along!! Since we are planning this, cut out my adult human staples–coffee, wine, sushi, and all my fav mercury-filled fish. It has been quite an adjustment. It is great that your hubs is on board! I could never ask P.D. to give up his coffee habit… He wouldn’t last too long…
You never know… I LOVE chocolate – but there was a time – probably second trimester – when I couldn’t stand the look of anything sweet. No sugar for me and certainly no chocolate!
That said, Michael does appreciate a good chocolate bar or some M&Ms – so apparently my temporary food aversion didn’t do any permanent harm
Heehee! Thank goodness he didn’t miss out on that sweet tooth!
I cannot even comprehend having an aversion to bacon or Sour Skittles! Eep!
My advice is to remove these foods from your diet for the duration of your pregnancy. Not because of any nutritional benefits, but because you may one day find yourself in the position of having to SHARE.
LOL! Great advice! I am not good at sharing my favorites…
A brilliant piece of advice!
Good to know. If I have a baby I’m sure mine will love bacon also. … and Mrs. Field’s cookies!!
Bacon makes the world go ’round! And my hubs is all about the Mrs. Field’s cookies too! If food preference is genetic…
Haha this is too cute! Gosh…I like so many things…fruit, ice cream, chocolate, cheez-its! (I’m not proud of this)
Ever since I read this comment, I’ve been craving cheez-its! So yummy! I bet the little peanut will enjoy all of those foods!
